President Gill passed over the reins to incoming President Mumtaz,
93rd Incoming President 2020-21 - DR MUMTAZ ALI.One of the most remarkable strengths of the Rotary Club of Hounslow is its multicultural and multinational professional membership.
Incoming President, Dr Mumtaz Ali, is a typical case in point. A qualified medical doctor holding a Masters degree in Epidemiology from the University of Wales and a Diploma in child health from the University Hospital Sheffield, Dr Ali lectured at the Riyadh College of Medical Science in Saudi Arabia from 1994-2002, while simultaneously running a general practice for the students before returning to the UK in 2002. Currently Dr Ali is a Company Director and self-employed.
Apart from his work for the Rotary Club of Hounslow, Dr Ali runs his own charitable activities including a series of eye camps in the Shaheed Benazir Abad District in Sindh, the home province of his family in Pakistan. The project, which started in 2007, is supported by the Rotary Club of Nawabshah (Rotary District 3271) the old name of the Shaheed Benazir Abad District.
Funds are raised with the help of family, friends, the Rotary Club of Hounslow and the Sindh Doctors' Association.
As per 2018 the Project has completed seven free eye camps in different rural locations, organising outpatients’ clinics for nearly 9000 people with eye problems and 1100 cataract operations restoring sight and the quality of life for patients and - most importantly - their ability to earn their own livelihood to support their families. In poverty- stricken rural areas being able to see again is a life-changing experience for the individual. Plans for 2021 are already in preparation.
Dr. Ali’s own background in medicine is also at the basis of his most ambitious project – to construct a 200-bed hospital in the ancient city of Hala, an important centre of Sufism in the Matiari District of Sindh in Pakistan.
Despite being a Rotarian since 2005 with a decided global mission, Dr. Ali is heavily involved with the more local work of the Rotary Club of Hounslow, such as general fundraising, health awareness projects like Stroke Awareness and the Care Leaver Activity Programme now in its second year. Most recently, he has been integral to the Club’s Covid 19 projects.
In all his endeavours, Dr. Ali is ably and actively supported by his wife Sugra Ali, a qualified teacher at Borough Road College of Education and KS1 teacher, who taught at the British School in Riyadh until her return to the UK with her husband in 2001. She is a three-times President of the Inner Wheel Club of Hounslow and will be President Elect of the Rotary Club of Hounslow in the forthcoming year. Sugra Ali is also a joint Director in her husband’s company.
Mumtaz and Sugra Ali are known for their lavish fundraising brunches and teas, which are legendary events for all Hounslow Rotarians and friends.
Both Mumtaz and Sugra are strongly committed to Rotarian values and Rotary's aim of Service to the Community and feel privileged to be part of an organisation dedicated to global peace and conflict resolution.
