ALMOST £10,000 was raised for good causes at this year’s Thurrock Cycle Marathon – with cheques handed out to a number of local organisations.
The event is organised annually by the Rotary Club of Mar Dyke Valley and this year around 300 riders took part over the three distances, seven miles, 21 miles and 42 miles.
Club members hosted a dinner this week for representatives of some of the organisations that benefited.
Club president Richard Morton welcomed the guests, who also included borough Mayor Cllr Terry Piccolo, to the dinner at Langdon Hills Golf and County Club.
He told them this year’s even was the 29th organised by the club and he expressed his thanks to members and their friends and families who helped organise the day. And also to sponsors who included the Port of Tilbury, Decathlon, Costco, South Eastern CVR Ltd and Lehrain Commercials Ltd and to the St John Ambulance.Once again one of the star performers on the day was 92-year-old Stan Wall, who rode 21 miles and, with a top up from the Rotary Club, raised £3,500 for Help For Heroes.
His efforts were praised by the charity’s representative Carol Groves who received the cheque.
Cllr Piccollo received a cheque for £500 for Thurrock Council’s GIFT charity, which distributes funds to worthy local charities and individuals.
Andrew Russell and Melvin Owen represented Prostate Cancer UK, who were handed a cheque for £850 from Rotarian Lionel Hayward.
Rotarian Terry Havis presented Peter Hacking of Thurrock RNLI with a cheque for £2,500 while St Luke’s Hospice community fundraiser Joanne Phillips was on hand to receive £1,100 from Rotarian Clive Broad.
The Yamaguchi Goju-Kai Karate club received £400, which was presented
by Rotarian David Westcott and his wife Kathryn, who rode in the cycle
marathon. It was received by Mark Adams who spoke on behalf of the
guests when saying: “We are all really grateful to the Rotary Club of
Mar Dyke Valley and for all the good work you do for local charities.
The money we have received will help young people in Thurrock attend an
event in Japan in 2021.
Among the other charities to receive donations were the Christine Willet Trust and Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.
