Young Vocalists

A very special musical event was held at Cowbridge Comprehensive School on Thursday 10th October. Students competed in the local heats of the national ‘Rotary Young  Vocalist’ competition.   The local event, organised this year by the Rotary Club of Llantwit Major, was to select a winner from a shortlist of finalists, who would go on to represent the district at the next level. 

The audience heard a wide range of music, from old classics to musicals, sung in English, French and Italian.  Three winners were selected.   

 The winner of the local heat was Rhianna Hogg, who sang 'Chanson d'Amour' by Faure and 'We'll Gather Lilacs' by Novello.  Runner up was Ruby Llewelyn who sang ' Caro Mio Ben' and 'Good Morning Baltimore' from the musical ‘Hairspray’.  Third place went to Poppy Hinken Evans who sang 'Wishing you were sometimes here again' from the musical ‘Phantom of the Opera’, and ' Home ' from ‘Beauty and the Beast’.

 The distinguished judges, Rhiannon Williams, Antony Tarlton and Julie Williams provided feedback to the students and commented on the excellent standard attained by everyone who had taken part.   

 The Cowbridge and Llantwit Major Clubs will be holding the local heats of the national  ‘Rotary Young Instrumentalist’ competition at 6.30pm on November 12th at Cowbridge School Hall.  The event promises to be another entertaining musical evening, and entry to the Hall is free of charge for those wishing to come along and support the finalists on the night.
