The cliff at Beachy Head is the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain, rising to 162 metres (531 ft) above sea level. The Iconic Beachy Head Lighthouse was built between 1900 -1902, using 3,660 tons of Cornish granite in the construction of the tower which is very much part of the Eastbourne scene.

In June 2010, Trinity House, who operate all lighthouses in the UK, announced it could no longer afford to repaint the distinctive red and white stripes and that the lighthouse would have to be left to return to its natural granite grey.

Whilst this was understandable for a strictly cost and navigation point of view, because it is so much a part of the Eastbourne coast, many thought that a private fund raising scheme should be adopted to raise the necessary funds for the painting. By coincidence, two groups came up with the idea of fund raising at the same time – The Save the Stripes Internet campaign, and the Rotary Club of Eastbourne AM. Between them they raised funds to have the painting undertaken at a cost of £28,000, with paint supplied by local independent company Brewers.

Now an annual event, the date is a rare opportunity when a Spring tide occurs at the right time, and during daylight hours to enable people to walk around the lighthouse. 2019 was the sixth year and took place on Saturday 4th May. The walk was originally started to raise funds for the re-painting necessary, and now it continues to save funds to contribute to the costs when it again needs to be re-painted plus supporting local charities organised by the Rotary Club of Eastbourne AM in conjunction with the “Save the Stripes” campaign and supported by the Eastbourne Herald.

This calendar was developed as a result of the amazing photographs sent to The Rotary Club of Eastbourne AM by members of the public who took part in the 2019 walk. Each calendar costs £10 including postage and packing and all profits will go to local rotary charities.
