Topic:- Transition Stirling

Rotary club of Stirling meeting of 29th November.

VP Alan Bradshaw welcomed members and two guests, Gigha Smith our speaker, and Sandy Reynolds of the Salvation Army to our Friday meeting.

We meet again on Thursday 5th November, 6.30 for 7pm, when our speaker will be Alyn Smith MEP talking about his experience at the European parliament.   We were pleased to present Sandy Reynolds with a donation to the Stirling branch of the Salvation Army. Sandy thanked us for this particularly at Xmas when they are committed to provide meals for a large number over and above their regular care for disadvantaged locals.

Gigha Smith's subject was Transition Stirling which is based at 12 Stirling Arcade. This is a local charity started in 2009 whose purpose is the prevention of global warming in a variety of ways,
in particular the reuse of old equipment and materials rather than adding to landfill.
For £30 you have a year's membership allowing you to borrow a variety of equipment, especially those you will use only once, saving you money and cutting down the amount of equipment lying unused at home. Clearly the members identify with the purpose of the charity as in 10 years only 3 items have not been returned. There is also a repair service, charges being based on ability to pay, although many chose to contribute more. The growing and purchase of locally produced food is encouraged, and children are often involved in their activities. The charity employs the equivalent of two full time staff plus enthusiastic and skilled volunteers. As with all charities funding is currently difficult, more activities with less cash, a view echoed by our guest Sandy from the Salvation Army. Despite this they try to add services, most recently a 3D printer which can make spare parts allowing reuse rather than dumping.

Gigha's enthusiasm about this very important subject was evident, and she clearly struck a chord with the members. Transition Stirling can be contacted at 14 Stirling Arcade,

Our next meeting Thursday 5th December 6.30 for 7pm. Visitor's host Ian Richardson.
