School Speaker Evening - Dalziel High School

Tonight the members of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw were entertained by three pupils, from Dalziel High School, during our School Speakers evening.
Our visitors were introduced by their principal teacher of English, Kareen Lawrie.
Sophie Cochran spoke first on ‘What it’s like to be a fourteen-year-old’, touching on the pressures of home life, social media and academia, not to mention climate change, and many other topics. Sophie’s speech was excellent and very well delivered with a sense of fun, summed up by her final statement, “To be happy, you have to be yourself”!
Next, Jack Wilson addressed the topic of ‘Board Games’. Starting with a bit of their history, Jack then expressed the opinion that they brought out the best and worst in people. Rather than declining in the computer age, games are still worth $10 billion per year! Talking on the enjoyment of playing Monopoly, Scrabble or Trivial Pursuit, he asserted that board games are good for you, having the therapeutic effects of reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s and, even, lowering blood pressure. Jack’s speech was very humorous and tongue in cheek.
‘Holidays and so much more’ was the basis of our final speech from Callum Sergeant. Callum’s, very witty, subject was one experienced by everyone in the room, the stresses of preparing for our flight to our holiday destination. Every aspect was explored from the difficulties of packing, to meet weight limits, and the joy of passing through the airport from bag drop, through security, to buying ‘tat’ at the duty free, walking miles to the departure gate and, on arrival, the ordeal of waiting for the arrival of your luggage on the carousel!!
As always, the members were very impressed by the talent of the young people who treated us to an excellent evening.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Jim Peat who thanked Mrs Lawrie, Sophie, Jack and Callum for giving up their time to entertain us.
