Planting Crocuses for Polio

Thu, Nov 7th 2019 at 10:00 am - 10:00 am

Pupils and Rotarians at work.

Members of King Offa School were assisted by members of Bexhill Rotary Club when they planted 4,000 crocus corms on the De la Warr lawn. Since 1979 Rotary have set the target of ridding the world of polio, a disease which killed and disabled millions of people. The condition, once widespread, can be prevented by vaccination and is now limited to a few pockets in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is vital that this vaccine programme is maintained so that this terrible disease can be eliminated once and for all. The purple crocuses remind us that children's fingers are dyed purple to indicate they have been vaccinated. Rotary Clubs regularly undertake collections towards vaccine programmes and the Bill and Melinda Gated Foundation donate £2 for every £1 donated.
