Community Chest presentation with (invited) guests

.

This was an information evening for our Community Chest project, in the company of some award recipients, to give an update on what had been achieved – thereby also widening community awareness.

On behalf of the Club and our Community Chest in particular, Club member Roy Stirrat welcomed representatives from local organisations which had been awarded grants from the Community Chest. He explained that the application paperwork emphasises that the grants are for specific projects and not for the running costs of the organisation.

Our Community Chest was formed in 2016 with an initial £3,000 available to give as grants and in 2017 Balerno Village Trust and Cala Homes joined adding to the funds available. Roy emphasised that, despite ‘Balerno’ and ‘Currie’ being our Rotary Club name, applications were welcomed from further afield – in fact, an application from Kirknewton met the criteria and a grant was awarded.

Publicity for the Community Chest has included the C&B News, one of a series of projected images shown to the audience. Roy continued by emphasising the wide range of projects whose applications have been successful. He also projected an image of the application form which can be accessed on this website. Twice per year application deadlines are end of May and end of November. We were pleased when one guest commented that the application form was not difficult to complete while the decision was given with minimum delay.

Various examples of successful applications were highlighted before President Lindsay concluded the meeting by asking our guests to kindly spread the word about the work of Rotary, and Currie Balerno Rotary Club in particular. In relation to the former, he mentioned Rotary’s global ‘End Polio Now’ project which has cost billions of dollars over many years and is now very close to the eradication of polio throughout the world. The scale of the ongoing project can be illustrated by the following:

⦁    A global immunisation day with thousands of volunteers treating 350 million children – in one day!
⦁    For every dollar raised for polio eradication, the Bill Gates Foundation donates double the amount raised.

Local charities and other organisations are reminded that the deadline for the next tranche of grants is end of May.
