Architect impression of the new home for the Museum at Maryfield Tram Depot
Dundee Museum of Transport opened in April 2014 at our temporary premises at Market Mews. We tell the stories of local transport pioneers and innovators as well as displaying vehicles from local and national collections. Come along and learn about Dundee’s tram network, railway and marine history from our team of enthusiastic volunteer guides. Look around our constantly changing selection vehicles, get up close and personal with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and have a look at our recreation of Dundee’s first flying machine.

The Future Home of the Museum
Museum Trustees have worked hard alongside Andrew Black Design to produce a set of designs that offer the space we will need for the future and yet retain the character and iconic front elevation of the building.
The main entrance is moved to the northern side of the building, and the dilapidated rear roof section is removed completely. A new steel supporting structure is inserted within the rear 60m length topped with a contemporary and raised roof covering.
Inside, the central courtyard offers reception, cafe and shop facilities in a light and airy environment. During the first phase of the redevelopment visitors turn left to the display area under the vibrant elevated new roof structure.
Once fully complete the rear area under the new roof will house workshops, storage and back office facilities. Turning right from the courtyard visitors will enter the extended display area in the restored earlier part of the building.
This proposal from Dundee Museum of Transport offers a viable and long lasting future for this important building. This phased project will deliver a cost effective regeneration of the site. The increased tourist and visitor draw created by the new museum will build on the recent success of the V&A and complement other family friendly attractions within the city.
