Setting up Hansel in Scotland

On the 14th January a most interesting talk was given by Jean Barclay on Hansel in Scotland. She outlined the history of Hansel, and its origins in the change from the Julian to Gregorian calendar in 1582. Particularly with the non Conformist church, the tradition of celebrating the New Year by giving gifts (Hansel) as a token of good luck on the Julian calendar, some 11 days later than the Gregorian, continued in Dunfermline until it faded out around the First World War.

The talk was full of fascinating detail about Hansel in Dunfermline, and how it was celebrated over the years. It fitted well with the Club presenting gifts to Fife Gingerbread in their mission to support single parent, disadvantaged and vulnerable families, particularly over the festive season with the financial pressures that that involves.
