Despite the current ‘lockdown’ members of Penrith Rotary Club have continued their Monday meetings. In normal times these are held in the upper room of The George Hotel. Meetings are now being held virtually by members on their laptops and I-phones. Members log in on Mondays to their Zoom accounts and meetings as far as possible follow the normal club format. Despite many of the club being ‘Silver Surfers’ it is amazing how lively and interesting the Monday meetings are. The club has even managed to induct a new member online. Last Monday a club quiz was organised by Rotarian Martin Montgomery. This proved a huge success and planning for the next quiz night is already underway. Speaker meetings have been held, including one by Rotarian John Shorter who talked about his fund-raising ride with his wife Maureen, from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
Members have agreed to donate the cost of the weekly meals they normally have in The George to Penrith Salvation Army to support the Food Bank a cheque for £700 has been presented. Penrith Rotary Club President Dawn Smart is keen for the club to operate as near to normal as possible. She said ‘In these times of isolation and lockdown it is more important than ever to ensure the club operates as normally as possible. Members are keen to get back to their regular meetings at The George but in the meantime they are continuing to refine their online skills and support each other’.If anyone is interested in finding more about the Penrith Rotary Club, they should look at the club’s website to see what is going on.
