MORPETH ROTARY ANNUAL THREE WAY QUIZ
Around 50 members and friends of Morpeth Rotary, Inner Wheel and Lions met to compete for club honour and a silver salver at Morpeth Golf Club. The contest was to find out which team knew the most in a general knowledge quiz of seven rounds. It was a trying time for the Lions as two of their best geniuses could not attend due to illness and they had to borrow a professor from Rotary to make up their team. The rounds were without theme except for the picture round. There was to have been a music round but there was a technical difficulty, the machine wouldn’t switch on. The quizmaster offered to sing the melodies but that was thankfully declined. Questions included: where is the only thatched pub in Northumberland?; which Roman road ran north/south through Corbridge?; what is the Latin family name for broccoli?; what is the biggest creature on Earth?; and a tricky one asking who was the last prime minister of the French Fourth Republic?. Rotary was in the lead for the first two rounds then was overtaken by Inner Wheel. At the fourth round Lions were only two points behind Inner Wheel and Rotary again in the lead. From then on Inner Wheel kept the lead and the final round of the picture quiz confirmed the win. It had close ups of a toothbrush and a paper clip but then got much harder with pictures of a blood orange and a single grain of white sugar. The Inner Wheel team of Cynthia Livesey, Suzanne Hamnett, Vivien Scott and June Hudspith were presented with the silver salver by Rotary President Martyn Jenkins. To end the evening there was an enthusiastic speech of acceptance and pride from Inner Wheel President Maureen Robson.
