Weekly Meeting - Talk by Guest Speaker, Chloe Grant, on Motor Sport.

Chloe meets Lewis Hamilton

I met with the Rotarians at a lunch in February and I spoke of plans for my racing in 2020, but my plans have changed dramatically since then, as they have for all of us.

Motorsport UK cancelled all race meetings until the end of June, so the two main championships I had entered have had their first two race meetings cancelled. If racing starts in July they might try to add these into the calendar later in the season. In the meantime, I am going to do simulator racing known as esports. I have been advised that to progress into racing cars from karts, at an age when I cannot drive a car, a simulator is a necessity. Once we looked into it, we noticed that there were many racing drivers that were also using simulators during lock down, and also just in general, so that’s what we decided to do!

Being in lock down during this time and being a racing driver makes it slightly harder to maintain my fitness like I would normally do.  My normal weekly routine is I go to school Mon-Fri 9-3.40pm and then I go to Chiropractic Life gym in Perth, and work with the private trainers 3 times per week for an hour at a time. The PT’s ensure I have an all round plan to work every part of my body - we lift weights, we do circuit training, high intensity training, and posture prep training, to name a few.  It is extremely important to work on strengthening my neck muscle to cope with the G-Force, and building my upper body and shoulder muscles so that I don’t get tired during a race.  I also go to hockey training 3-4 times per week which is good for my cardiovascular and my leg strength.  Then every weekend is spent testing and racing - my favourite part!

So during corona time, I am doing regular work outs in my house, and in the garden I spend a lot of time on my trampoline. We walk my dog daily, and also cycle, all to keep fit and healthy. My diet has been really good during lock down, and I am so lucky to have all the support to enable me to keep practising my racing through my sim due to not being able to get onto a track during this time.

After talking  at Rotary, Knockhill gave me training in their Honda Civic Type R’s on track. Their plan was for me to pass my ARDS test when I was still 13. Luckily I passed first time before the lockdown, and became the youngest person to hold a licence to race cars. I can’t wait to get racing again!

In the meantime we need to keep our heads up and keep pushing forward, but more than anything, stay at home and stay safe so that we can all get through this together.
