                                   District 1100 Newsletter January 2020

Hello again District 1100.

It’s hard to believe that the first month of 2020 has passed already. My main focus currently is District Conference, now only 6 weeks away.

If you haven’t registered, we can still squeeze you in at the moment. But don’t leave it long! You can find a list of speakers on the District website. Some will be moving, some inspirational, and a few just great fun.

Speaking of fun, on Saturday evening we will be dancing to one of the country’s top Abba tribute bands – there’s a prize for the Club who come the most appropriately dressed! Free Money (That always gets readers’ attention)!

A couple of Saturdays ago, we held the first District Council meeting of 2020. We are obliged to hold these meetings to deal with procedural and financial matters (e.g. voting in new District Officers and on proposals for new finance initiatives).

I’m pleased to report that we passed proposals to give Clubs a £500 grant when they reach their Centenary – as Gloucester do this year – and the opportunity to apply for matching grants (up to £250) for new Youth initiatives (details on the District website).

Mixed in with the necessary business were some presentations about Club projects. Hopefully those who attended will have brought back ideas either of new projects to get involved with, or how to increase the impact of existing initiatives through drawing on the experience of, or working together with, Clubs already involved.

Youth This year’s Youth Competitions are ramping up now. The District Youth Speaks final will be held at Maisemore Village Hall on 1st February, when the Young Photographer and Writer winners will be announced.

The District Young Chef final is on 29th February at Severn Vale School. Good luck to all competitors.

We are fast approaching the deadline for nominating remarkable young people for Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2020 (14th February). These Awards are a fantastic opportunity for young people and showcase Rotary at its best. They will be presented by BBC TV Presenter Ellie Crisell at Volunteer Expo in Birmingham on 2nd May.  International I know some Clubs considered if, and how, to give support in the wake of the disastrous fires that erupted across Australia. The money we raise is not infinite; we cannot finance everything, so Swindon North chose to send a message of friendship to District 9520, which covers parts of 4 Australian states.

In his January Newsletter, DG Tim Klar included some of the messages received from around the world – including the one Old Town. (See attachment). The figure shown in the graphic was as at 16th January.

World Polio Day Looking for a way to mark Rotary Day on (or close to) 23rd February? Fill Your Plate for Polio is a simple idea, bringing people together for food and drink, gathering to collect vital funds to support vulnerable children around the world. Resources to help bring your event to life can be downloaded from the Rotary GB&I website. www.rotarygbi.org/projects/purple4polio

Preparing for the 2020-21 Rotary year DGE Chris has just returned from International Assembly in San Diego, preparing to lead our District during the next Rotary year. He is aiming to pass his knowledge and enthusiasm onto the District Team and Presidents Elect (PE’s) in the upcoming preparation meetings. (Dates below).

It’s really important for PE’s to make every effort to attend. Even if you have held the office before, I guarantee you will learn something new and useful.
