Australian Bush Fires

The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District take action

We have all seen the disastrous fires that have erupted, taking lives of people and animals as well as destroying local habitat, homes and properties across Australia.

International Convenor, Charlene Henderson thought that we as a club should step up and take action to assist the Australian communities, but which charity to support that will ensure that our donation reach those in need?

The Club’s International Committee decided to take advice from fellow member Ed Hunter who is in Victoria, Australia, at the moment. After Ed spoke with Torquay Rotary Club, Victoria, to which he is a regular visitor whilst in Australia, it was decided to donate AU$500 (£260.62) to a “RAWCS” project, “Rotary National Bushfire Appeal”

Rotary Australia World Community Service Ltd. (RAWCS) was formed to enable Australian Rotarians, Rotary Districts and Rotary Clubs to assist disadvantaged communities and individuals through humanitarian aid projects.

Rotary is once again taking the lead and looking to provide support for families in need. When you donate through RAWCS you can be assured that over 97% of the monies raised will go directly to those in need.

The Rotary Club of Torquay like ourselves are a small cog in a large wheel and they too are  donating some of the funds raised from their recent book fair and motor show to RAWCS. Mike on behalf of Torquay Rotary Club gave thanks to Thornhill Rotary Club for their generous donation to the Rotary National Bushfire Appeal.

Fellow member Ed Hunter said “The fires seem to have gone from the headlines now but they are still not under control and the various Rotary Clubs in the areas affected will provide much needed help to their local communities”.

It is good to see that although we are a world apart we all still uphold the Rotary principle “Service Above Self”
