St Columba’s are the senior winners of ‘Youth Speaks – A Debate’
On Sunday 9th February, the West of Scotland District Final of Rotary’s “Youth Speaks – A Debate” competition was held at Glasgow Caledonian University.
Speaking on “We are too sensitive”, St Columba’s won by the narrowest of margins – one point from Bearsden Academy who finished as Runner-up. The winners now progress to the next stage of the national competition. Each team consisted of three pupils and the brief stipulated that there had to be a chairperson, a proposer and an opposer.
John Pears, chairperson of the judges said, “It was a pleasure to listen to these young people who are the incoming generation. He mentioned that humour was a great tool to help engage with the audience and was used well by each team. All were winners and all gave an excellent performance”.
The winning team consisted of chairperson, Mark Clelland, proposer Elliot Nixon and opposer Bronte Marritt. District Governor Jimmy Johnston presented the prizes.
St Columba’s will now go forward to face other top schools from across Scotland in the Scottish Regional Final, which is being held in Stirling on Saturday 7th March.
The Senior Category of the competition offers young people, aged 14 – 17, the experience of speaking on a public platform as members of a team. Each year, hundreds of young people take part in the local, district and regional events that culminate in the Rotary National Final.

The first round of this national competition was held in St Columba’s School, Kilmacolm on Monday 27th November. Seven teams competed, four in the Intermediate age category and three in the Senior category

Young Chefs from Gryffe High, St Benedict’s High and St Columba’s School met in Gryffe High on the 29th November to compete in the first stage of this Rotary GB and I competition

To encourage walking in the local environment, we are promoting local walking groups, publishing local walking routes and creating the Gryffe Valley Way, a walking route the length of the River Gryffe.

To support disabled sailing for wheelchair users at Castle Semple Loch Gryffe Valley Rotary purchased a special powered Wheelyboat to enabled those in wheelchairs to get out onto the water.

The club organises outings for groups of Renfrewshire Young Carers, with activities followed by a meal and drink. Some years we visited Xscape at Braehead, Hillington for the electric go-karts, and then Castle Semple Loch
