What we do to encourage reading

The best way to encourage someone to read - give them a book!

Every year, members of Manchester Breakfast and Stockport Lamplighter Rotary Clubs, together with friends from Rotaract Manchester International, gather outside a local supermarket, and give away hundreds of books - absolutely free.

This event is usually scheduled for the beginning of March, both to tie in with World Book Day, and with this traditionally having been Rotary's Literature Month. And what better way to encourage literacy and a love of reading than by giving away books!

The giveaway is extremely popular, with some two thousand books being taken over  the course of a few hours.  Children's books are always in high demand, with stocks typically disappearing in the first couple of hours.

The club has also supplied children's books and dictionaries to local schools, organised a scheme to help community members improve their English, and club members have been involved with one-to-one reading support.
