Just before the lockdown, Elizabeth and I travelled to the
Powfoot Hotel on the Solway for her birthday. It is a splendid little hotel
with quite outstanding food, and is situated next to the James Braid- designed
golf course, a typical Scottish links which was a pleasure to play.
The most interesting
feature was this structure which we viewed from the dining room twice daily as
the tide went in and out. It is a Victorian swimming pool, constructed of
Canadian wood on a concrete base, which has withstood the ravages of the Solway
Firth for well over a century. It was to be a feature of a proposed spa resort,
which, sadly, never came to fruition. This part of the country is well worth a
visit.

The
lockdown has afford me time to start clearing out the loft. My father
subscribed to Life Magazine during the sixties and seventies until it closed. I
knew I had stored several copies, but had not seen them for nearly 40 years.
Here are some memorable covers: the space race of the mid-sixties, Bobby
Kennedy’s Assassination, the first heart transplant and the growing opposition
to the Vietnam war. I now look forward to reading them again, which should give
me plenty of material for future speaker duties!
Keep safe, everyone.
