The Sutherland family’s 2 year old son, Euan, has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, a painful and potentially disabling condition affecting the body’s joints. He has recently had to undergo an intensive course of treatment with steroids, which suppress the body’s immune system. As a consequence, in addition to Euan, his parents and two teenage siblings have had to go into shielding for 12 weeks. Since they live in a first floor flat in St Andrews, that means no contact with the outside world and no communication other than by telephone. Rotary agreed to purchase an iPad to enable the Sutherland’s to communicate with family and friends by video conferencing. The family also benefitted from an act of real kindness from a member of staff at St Anrews Community Hospital who had already offered her holiday letting house to any NHS workers having to go into shielding. No one had taken up the offer, so in response to a request posted on Facebook by the family’s Health Visitor, she immediately offered them the use of her house near Dunino.
