President Katrina welcomed members to tonight’s virtual meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw.

Pigeon Derby organiser Paul Begley updated members on this summer’s event, run, as always, with the assistance of our former member, Past President George Pollock. by saying that overall numbers are down this year but we have a couple of new members with us. Once again, we will aim to participate in 4 races with our first report being given on 13th August. As in previous years, the funds raised will be used to sponsor a local young person attending R.Y.L.A. (the Rotary Youth Leadership Award) ‘outward bound’ style weekend.

Our Club speaker, this evening, was P.P. Jim Robertson who celebrated his ninetieth birthday last month. Jim, from Wishaw, has been married to Wilma for 62 years and his talk was about the highlights in his life, highlighting his education, hobbies and professional life.

Jim spoke, fondly, of his National Service days in the RAF. He gave an interesting account of his time at Leuchars, in Fife, working on the instruments of Meteor jet fighters. During his service he represented the RAF in both golf and badminton.

He recounted being asked by John Mair to be his Conference Convener, in Aberdeen, when John was District Governor of District 1020, and arranging for the keynote speaker to be Helen Sharman, Britain's first astronaut.

Jim also mentioned the challenge of public speaking on Radio Clyde and at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

However, the real highlight of his life was delivering his daughter while he waited for the doctor to arrive!

President Katrina thanked Jim for such an interesting and very personal presentation.

Willie Talbot advised that the winner of the weekly bonus ball, which included a three-week rollover was Immediate Past President Andrew Murray. The first Numbers Club draw of the new session was made by Willie's wife, Agnes, and the winners were John Robson, Ian St John and, our new member, Jean Murray.
