General Meeting - Virtual on Zoom

Thu, Sep 10th 2020 at 7:30 am - 8:30 am

ROTARY CLUB OF CHESTFIELD

Breakfast Meeting via Zoom:  10th September 2020.

Present:      Pat; Iain; Dave C; Sue; Robert S; Andrew & Jean M; Godfrey; Kathryn (President); Lesley; David K; Peter; Andrew B; David B; Hilary.

General:      Kathy thanked everyone for being there online.  We discussed the Rotary Ride Walk / Cycle event last Saturday.  Some members felt we should have a different route next time; the start off was ragged and we didn’t all walk or cycle together.  Next time we should stick together better as a group.

Godfrey reminded everyone about the next car parking day on Sunday.

Pat and Sue reported that all was ready for the sky dive on Sunday.  Kathy said she hopes to be there.  There needs to be someone there who will take photographs.  Sue and Pat will message Kathy when they have done.

Regarding the World Polio Day event, we have previously discussed asking All Saints church if they could light up the side of the building purple.  Iain did follow this up with Simon the vicar but it doesn’t seem to be a practicable proposition.  Kathy will talk to Kevin to see if we can do something to mark the occasion jointly with Whitstable.

Andrew asked if there is any news about our usual Autumn gardening day at the Whit & Tank?  He hasn’t heard anything.  Kathy will contact Marion.  The meeting wondered if the re-imposed Covid-19 rules will affect this.

Members present said it was nice to see David B looking well.  David said he has one minor investigation left to go.  He thanked club members for their support.  He will order a wreath for the club for Remembrance Sunday.

What about the breakfast meeting next Thursday, can we go ahead with this in the face of the new Covid-19 rules?  There were two points of view.  One is that the rules don’t preclude going to a restaurant, and also that it’s the restaurant’s responsibility to ensure it acts within the rules.  So we could go ahead.  The opposing view is that if we do go ahead we will create a (false?)  impression that we are flouting the rules - which will be a reputational issue.  We could be seen to be acting as irresponsibly as the young people on the beaches.  So we should cancel.  The rules aren’t clear about what counts in a restaurant – if there are 18 of us at different tables are we one big big bubble (not allowed) or separate little bubbles (allowed)?  After discussion it was resolved to cancel breakfast next week and have two Zoom meetings before the next date when we might have met face-to-face.  In between times, Leslie will talk to Mel at the Plough.  The Board will meet (online) next Wednesday, and someone will be deputed to ask advice from District.

Kathy said we have two birthdays due shortly, David B and Robert S.  Best wishes to both from the club.

Sue said she has heard from Gordon.  He has had one bout of chemo, and is awaiting another.  He sends his regards.  Family and friends are said to be organising a sponsored walk in aid of SNAAP.

Next meetings:      Board Meeting Wednesday 16th @ 6.00pm.

                             Breakfast Meeting Thursday 17th @ 8.00am.
