Meeting by Zoom: Jim McPherson talks about Hub Schools

Thu, Jul 2nd 2020 at 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Members have been sent 'invitations' to allow them to join this virtual meeting of the Club using the Zoom facility

Twelve members took part in Hawick Rotary's meeting by Zoom. They were joined online by Honorary Member Robin Mason who now lives in Brechin, and by Jim McPherson of the Selkirk Club. New President Ron Smith welcomed those taking part and, after considering several items of business, he introduced Jim as our first guest speaker at these Zoom meetings.

Jim's subject was the Hub Schools being utilised in the Scottish Borders during the Coronavirus situation. He and Keith Irving had organised Bikeability classes at Primary Schools such as Wilton in a range of Borders towns. Pupils in the P4 – S1 range, mainly the children of key workers who had been registered daily at these schools, were taught safe cycling techniques and bicycle repair and maintenance procedures. However Rotarians also learned how the hub school process was administered from registration and time scheduling to lunch arrangements and cleaning procedures. Jim has a good knowledge of how Zoom works and so he was also able to help Hawick members who were unsure over using the facility, and thus his 'visit' was an excellent lesson in using Zoom, and in inviting further guest speakers. He fielded a large number of questions from members.

While members would obviously prefer their normal get-togethers, Zoom is meanwhile serving a purpose in keeping us all in communication with each other.
