Annual Tintern Abbey Torchlight Carol Service
Sat 5th December 2020 at 6.10 pm - 8.10 pm
A spectacular experience in an atmospheric setting. Due to Corona virus we are unable to stage this event.
On Saturday 07 December we staged our annual Torchlight Carol Service at Tintern Abbey. This most popular family event is always well supported and this year almost 900 people attended.
Families gathered at Tintern with their flaming torches held on high while the smaller members carried their glowing light-sticks. Then, at 6 o'clock they walked slowly in column around the outside of the Abbey while the wonderful singing of the combined choir of Wyedean and St John's-on-the-Hill schools radiated from within and added to the ambience on a crisp evening. Tintern Abbey by night, in floodlight, with hundreds of flaming torches burning brightly and with the sound of carols sung by the choir, became a positively magical place. The congregation sang together the most popular carols lead by the choir interspersed with seasonal Bible readings and prayers. The Christmas season had begun.
The event goes from strength to strength and has become a very special local event that launches the Christmas Season. Every member of the family will remember Tintern for a long time to come. And all of the profits went towards Rotary charities.
This last year this event raised almost £5,000 and many charitable donations are made by the Club to local organisations and individuals who seek our support. Rotary is the community
