Peter joined us on Zoom to update us on Shelter Box,which we support each year. He gave a very interesting slide show presentation which was enjoyed by those present. More details below.

Helping in the Philippines following the hurricane there

Shelter Box was started by Helston Rotary in Cornwall as a millennium project in 2000.  It has since become a separate registered charity with responders throughout the world.  Since its formation it has helped 1.2M people involved in 300 disasters in over 100 countries.  It is still very much a partner with Rotary and clubs in disaster areas are frequently the local partner when aid is required.

Peter gave moving stories about particular individuals and families who had been helped.  He stressed that being a relatively small charity it was able to be nimble and adapt to the challenges that were faced in each particular situation.

As well as the main Shelter Box, there is also a Rotary Action Tool Kit which contains a more basic set of equipment for use in certain situations.

Each Shelter Box costs £600 and our club continues to support the charity each year.
