ARCHERY EVENING
The Club visited Savile Bowmen Archery Club on Tuesday 22nd May.
On a very pleasant sunny evening we enjoyed a new experience with bows and arrows, expert tuition and then a little competition between Luddite pairs. Won by "Upper Batley" Lydia and myself (Jeff), very closely followed by Martin and Mike with Ian and David bringing up the rear.

New Year Walk 2013 | The opening event of Bills Rotary year took place on Sunday 7th July.
Rotarians, partners, families and friends gathered on a beatiful sunny warm day for a walk around Birkenshaw and East Bierley and back to the Farm for a Breakfast lunch.

Santa Sleigh 2013 |  All December
Santa has travelled around the streets of Birstall and Howden Clough, raising money for local good causes.
Santa also visited Tesco and the Batley Mill village and a tour around St Thomas Church
before their carol service .
Santa also helped Kirkwood Hospice when he visited their Christmas Craft Fair at Batley Town Hall.
Thanks to Ian for organising Santa's Sleigh on his travels.

Outside Visit Mon 15th Sept 2014.
Ossett Brewery.
Twenty Luddites and friends gathered for a popular outside visit to Ossett Brewery.
Starting at seven pm samples of the Ossett Brews preceded the tour of the Brewery.
After the tour Luddites made their way to the Ossett Brewery pub the "Old Vic" in Ossett for a
Pie and Pea supper.

International Committee Brass Band Concert
SHELTER BOX APPEAL
On Sunday 16th Feb the International Committee organised a Brass Band Concert featuring the DRIGHLINGTON BRASS Band at St Thomas Church Batley.
Committee member Margaret Arthurs organised the event assisted on the evening by
International Committee Chairman John Logan.
An enjoyable evening resulted, the band started with a Testpiece St Magnus which was a practice piece for their coming competitions. Further pieces led to the interval with coffee tea and biscuits and the
drawing of the raffle.
The second half finished with a rousing "You'll never walk alone" and an encore of Toccata and Fugue.

Mystery Weekend 2014
The club held its annual Mystery Weekend on 5/6 April.
Organised by Nigel and Margaret Arthurs members met and set off from Woolley Edge Services following Treasure hunt clues down the M1.
The trail led through to south of Birmingham to Strattord up Avon and ended in Alcaster the HQ of Rotary and onto the Kings Court Hotel in Kings Coughton.
An enjoyable evening followed with Nigel announcing the winners of the Treasure Hunt -
Stephen and Maggie Gooder.
On Sunday the club drove back along the M42 to the National Memorial Arboretum near Alrewas Staffordshire. Luddites toured the centre of Rememberance which is set in 150 acres of woodlands and gardens with over 300 memorials to see. The Arboretum is also home to the striking Armed Forces Memorial, commemorating those killed on duty or as a result of terrorism from the end of the Second World War to the current conflict in Afghanistan.The weekend ended driving back up the M1 to Yorkshire.

Outside Visit to Robertos Restaurant Batley. | On Monday 23rd March the Club held its weekly meeting in the form of an outside visit to Roberto's Italian Restaurant in Batley.

Rotary Club of Birstall Luddites
Outside Visit - Equine Pathways UK - Mon 10th August.
Following the club talk by Paula Godfree at Healds Hall by Equine Pathways UK the club members followed up the talk with a visit to EPUK centre at Carr Hall Farm Gildersome.
Luddites met at 19:30 at the farm suitably shod and were then charmed by the "Team" of horses.
Carole Taylor the owner of Yorkshire Equine Clinic, qualified riding instructor, and professional horsewoman gave the club a lesson in how to handle Goochy a horse that has been traumatised
giving confidence to the horse and seeing the horse respond to her guidance
had all the Luddites enthralled as she walked and trotted Goochy around the stable exercise ring. John and Helen were invited to meet Goochy in the ring.
Carole and Paula with Michelle and Carole Rimmer then showed us around the stables answering questions and finally Pablo was led out to receive a supper of carrots that we had brought.
After a very interesting visit Rotarians partners and friends moved on to the nearby pub
The Old Brickworks for an evening meal.

Rotary Club of Birstall Luddites
Outside Visit to Holmfirth Vineyard.
The club visited Holmfirth Vineyard on a summer evening Monday 28th July.
The evening started with a tour of the vineyard site, looking at the vines followed by the production and bottling facilities.
Luddites then enjoyed wine tasting of the Holmfirth wines. Then followed a meal in the Vineyard restaurant.

The club has rolled out a refurbished sleigh (well done Bill) this year and Santa Bill, Santa Robert, Santa Ian and Santa Colin have toured the streets through December, the sleigh pulled sixteen! times by Ian.
As well as street collections Santa has visited the Birstall lights switch on, Tesco Batley, the Mill Batley, Batley Town Hall Kirkwood coffee morning, a street party in Mill street and visiting Fairfield school three times where Santa distributed presents to excited pupils. The final collection ended at St Thomas Church Batley for a carol service. The Woodlands Road collection was a wild and drencing collection but it didn't stop children coming out to see Santa.

A MURDER MYSTERY DINNER
"If You Can't Stand the Heat..."
Saturday 26th Sept 2015.
On behalf of Kirkwood Hospice Birstall Luddites held a Murder Mystery Dinner at Healds Hall Hotel.
One hundred Rotarian's partners and friends enjoyed a three course meal and were tasked with playing detective to the murder being acted around them by the actors who were sat at their tables and acting the scene of a Celebrity Chef of the Year Awards play.
Sir Arthur Aperitif, Mitch Starr, and Lynne Starr were the Judges with Janie Oliver, Celia Smith, Gordon Romsey and Harriet Ainsley played the Chefs. The Media played by Sarah Storey and the Police by Det Insp Harriet Lyme.
Diners were asked to fill their answer sheets with the Murderer and the Motive and give the sheets to the Police Inspector.
The evening concluded with Det Insp Harriet Lyme announcing the verdict with Sara Storey from the Media pronounced as the murderer.
Only one person got the correct murderer.
The Club ran a raffle and President Margaret at the following club meeting announced a profit of almost a thousand pounds for Kirkwood Hospice.

Afternoon Tea to End Polio
Luddite Rotarian Robert organised and led
this walk, the latest in a series he has organised. The walk blessed with a fine day raised £80-00 for our Club's
"End Polio Now" initiative and will help the world wide effort to eradicate this dreadful disease,
Robert thanks everyone for their support | Robert describes the walk -
"On the 10th of April 2016, we passed the Star Inn at Roberttown where in April 1812 two of the Rawfolds Mill luddites croppers attackers died of the wounds received in that affray, later being buried @ midnight near the graveyard of Hartshead church it is said. The views were far reaching, fellowship great, weather hot & sunny, we15 wanderers completed our walk after an hour, then enjoyed afternoon tea @ the Coffee Lounge, Liversedge where we were joined by Jackie, President Margaret and Nigel. The birthplace of two of the Bronte children, who died before the remaining family moved eventually to Haworth & fame, is nearby on Halifax Road".

| The Annual Seat of Knowledge Quiz.Mon 22nd Feb
| The club held the annual Seat of Knowledge Quiz at Healds Hall with 65 Rotarians
and guests testing their general knowledge with the questions this year being set by members of the
Rotary Club of Cleckheaton.
The quiz resulted in for the first time in 20 years I'm led to believe a team from
Birstall Luddites came first.
The team Ian ,Bill ,John and Oliver collected the Seat of Knowledge Seat and in the draw for next years quiz masters Birstall Luddites were drawn to set the questions in 2017.

The Rotary Club of Birstall Luddites presents
A Murder Mystery Evening
"CLUEDO"
"Taking the Fall" | On Saturday 14th May the Club held a Murder Mystery evening at Healds Hall Hotel to raise monies for Fairfield School electronic Eye Gazing equipment. Once again Emley Drama Group players entertained us with a murder plot whilst we were enjoying a 3 course meal. Characters Colonel Coleman Mustard, Professor Peter Plum, Victor Valet a few of the cast led us to follow the clues with written evidence.
The actors circulated the room for questioning between meal courses
Detective Inspector Harriet Lyme after receiving the final evidence gave us the murderer which was the Valet Victor Valet. Three teams tied for solving the mystery.
President Margaret thanked all Rotarian's and guests for their support and Rotarian Helen and Christine Breeze for help organising the event. A raffle was held to help raise more monies for Fairfield School.
Also thank Roger Harrington of Healds Hall for his support.

Rotary Club of Birstall Luddites
Club visit to the Rotary Club of Guernsey Apr 29 to May 2nd..
| The seeds for this visit were sown when Birstall Luddite Rotarian David Mullens upped sticks and
accepted a job in Guernsey, a big move in any ones book.
In due course David transferred to the Rotary Club of Guernsey and hence the lure of a club visit to
David and Caroline in their enviable new location in the Channel Isles.
President Margaret and Nigel set off 5 am "saw us driving through a blizzard to Manchester Airport to
catch the 9:10 am Guernsey flight.
Fortunately the sun shone for the rest of the Bank Holiday weekend and it was lovely to see David and Caroline again. They were wonderful hosts, taking us around and introducing us to their Rotary Club members at one of Davids famous BBQs. Club banners were exchanged before we made a very
early flight back to Manchester".

Fairfield School.
Club Rotarian's partners and friends gathered at Fairfield School for an outside visit.
School head Ann Tierny and Speech and Language manager Tracey Fillan met Luddites and invited us to their canteen for a buffet evening meal.
Ann told us about the school and the children, explaining the children's complex learning and mobility difficulties for the 128 pupils aged three to nineteen that they have attending at the school.
Ann then gave Luddites a guided tour of the school starting in the lower school. We looked at three classrooms for the nursery equivalent children and proceeded to the 7 to 11 year classrooms and shown a saferoom for autistic children. We could see the toys on display that Rotarian Colin Wall has been modifying so the children can operate the toys by means of a large saucer shaped switch. We passed the hydrotherapy swimming pool facilities and looked into the trampoline rebound therapy room and the green screen special lighting effects room. Ann explained their next project to upgrade the outside courtyard to allow the adapted bicycles to use a circuit area.
Finally we moved to the upper school classrooms and the transition area for school leavers.
We gathered and watched a video of the school and the children and Ann thanked the club for our help with Kids Out and the Santa visits at Christmas both of which were a very enjoyable help in the schools work with the children and the recent work that Colin has been doing with the toys.
President Margaret as part of her years charity awards aims to buy Fairfield a Eye Gazer tablet computer system.
At District 1040 Conference, Tracey gave a 40 min talk in the Communities break out session led by Willie Clark about the KIDS OUT and the school and the help that Rotary through Birstall Luddites had given to the school.
Willie praised Tracy for her talk and the help to show Rotary Communities work in the Community.

New Years Walk in September.
Sunday 14th Sept 2014 Luddites and friends gathered for Roberts "New Year" walk.
Starting from IKEA Robert led over the M62 footbridge and over the A650 Bradford Road through to Adwalton Moor. Robert gave a explanation of the Battle of Adwalton Moor and the stone monument in the moor.
Robert now led back over the A650 and down a track under the M62 to Oakwell Hall.
This was a good opportunity to look at the clubs Sun Dial and David Gregory's bench in the formal gardens of the Hall. Robert now led us back to IKEA passing Joseph Priestley birthplace. Luddites were back in their cars and onto IVES BLUE HILLS FARM, White Hall Road, Birkenshaw.
Luddites had worked up a good appetite for an English Breakfast.
Bill gave a big thanks from the Club to Robert and Jill for organising the walk.

Summer walkers enjoying a farmhouse lunch.

"A friendship/fundraising walk/meal , also supporting & thanking Birstall In Bloom."
Walkers assembled at Oakwell Hall on a very pleasant summers day at 12.00 noon.
Robert led walkers off up through Nova woods to the first Birstall in Bloom garden that walkers visited.
Fieldhead Farm garden is hidden behind the farmhouse and neglected for decades given a makeover for 2 years.
It is now a haven of space privacy and peace.
We met with owner Charlie Wilkinson to enjoy looking around.
Charlie took us to the adjacent showroom to look at Stepen Owens very impressive collection of vintage cars.
The walk took us down Fieldhead Lane to another garden on Nova Lane.
A Japanese themed garden with a Bonsai collection.
Here we met John and Linda, Linda is recovering from a knee replacement.
The final garden took us to Luddite Ian and Joannas lovely garden. After refreshments and garden browse we walked back to Oakwell to end the walk.
We drove up to Ives Farm where we all enjoyed a farmhouse brunch .
Thanks to Batley Rotarian David and Christine with now - Wakefield Rotarian Mike and friend,
Luddites Bill, Jeff and leader Robert and Jill. Margaret and Nigel met for the lunch.
The walk collaboration with Birstall in Bloom made for an interesting walk, Rotarian Ian is organiser of the Birstall Garden Trail and their proceeds of the day are shared between the Forget me not
Childrens Hospice and Birstall in Bloom.

KIDS OUT Wed 8th June 2016

Every June, the Rotary Organisation throughout Britain and Ireland together with KidsOut take over 25,000 disadvantaged children on a great big day out. The children visit the seaside, theme parks, adventure playgrounds & zoos giving them all wonderful memories to cherish for a lifetime.
Birstall Luddites sponsored 28 disabled children from Fairfield School plus carers to a day out at
Lightwater Valley Ripon.
Once again Heckmondwike
Rotary club jointly funded the event and two Heckmondwike Rotarians
Pupils attending were provided with transport to and from Lightwater
Valley, entrance to the park, a tee shirt and hat, lunch and also an ice
28 Children from the school, together with their carer’s were picked up
by coach from the school and transported to Lightwater Valley to enjoy
the facilities and rides available in the park. For the second successive
year a number of wheelchair users also attended and required the use of
attending to support the event and all those involved had a thoroughly
memorable day which was enhanced (once again) by good weather.

"A massive thank you to the Birstall Luddites Rotary Club for funding our amazing trip to Lightwater Valley yesterday. This was almost the twenty fifth consecutive year that they have taken our students to Lightwater Valley. This year we were able to take even more students.
The students had a huge amount of fun. They enjoyed ice-creams and had the opportunity to have their photographs taken with birds of prey. Our students loved going on all the different rides. Nicholas was even brave enough to go upside down on the Black Pearl, we boarded the Flying Camels which allowed for an interactive flight experience and some even got soaking wet on the Wild River Rapids! "
All of the students thoroughly enjoyed the trip which was of great benefit to themselves and positive memories were made all around.

Presidents end of year BBQ Sat 11th June 2016

Club members gathered at President Margarets for the Club annual end of year BBQ.
On a typical British June summers day - overcast and drizzle Luddites enjoyed the BBQ and later
watched Englands first football game in Euro 2016.
Baby Isabella seemed to steal the show with the ladies having cuddles in turn with mum Natalie and Dad Eddie and Grandma Helen and Grandad Colin looking on.

As part of Neighbourhood celebrations throughout the UK Birstall Luddites joined with St Peters Birstall in their fun day and picnic Get Together in and around their church on a very hot heatwave day.
 As part of the celebration Luddite Jeremy Parkinson for the club hired a bouncy castle. Other stalls
included Birstall in Bloom and Luddite Ian Blamires
The Church provided refreshments and a welcomed escape from the 30 degree heat in the church vestibule. Luddites enjoyed Get Together at St Peters.
Big thanks to Jeremy for organising the bouncy castle and Luddites for keeping an eye on excited children bouncing.
President Bill was also in attendance.
