During the latter years of the First World War members of the Rotary Club of Bristol contacted Mr C. Reginald Fox who was then Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce suggesting that businessmen in Plymouth form a Rotary Club. Due to the war this idea was not intially acted upon. However shortly after hostilities had ceased the idea was resurrected early in 1920 with discusions between W. T. Pearce, the immeadate past president of the Bristol club, and Sir Arthur N. Hollely. The latter convening a meeting on 12th November 1920 of prominent gentlemen of the town. The meeting resolved a club be formed under the auspices and in affiliation with the British Association of Rotary Club. The club was granted its charter on 21st December 1920 with Sir Arthur becoming its first president.
