DISCOVER U – ROTARY CLUB OF KINVER 27.10.2020
A Wollaston-based charity has received a £1,000 top-up to a previous £500 donation from the Rotary Club of Kinver to assist in its work providing work-related experience to adults, known as members, with learning or physical disability.
Based in the old bakery on Bridgnorth Road in Wollaston, Discover U consists of a tea room in the former bakery shop and a workshop at the rear where the old bakehouse has been converted to enable members to make a variety of craft items which are sold to raise funds.
Rtn Graham Smith, who heads the Rotary Club’s Youth Services team, says: “I was really surprised during a recent visit to Discover U to see the amount of work that has taken place during lockdown, with an upgrade of facilities to meet the needs of the 60 members who have recently started to go back in small groups, all under strict Covid19 guidelines.
“Charity organiser Steve Smith and his team of volunteers are so upbeat with some most exciting plans to develop things even further that it was a pleasure for me to be able to hand over this additional £1,000.”
Update
Steve Smith recently gave a talk to club with regard to Discover U. Steve set up the charity in 2015 to support young adults with learning disabilities. The charity is now based in the Old Bakery High Wollaston. and consists of a tearoom, workshop and sewing room. The aim is to get these members into employment and to help them along the journey the charity provides a whole host of opportunities to develop social, functional and social skills.it gives them a reason to get up in the morning, a purpose and from the pictures on the website you can see the young adults really love the experience. Whilst Covid 19 is restricting face to face, they have lots of virtual events every day to keep in touch and Steve did mention that due to the popularity of what the charity does, they are looking to set up a similar venture in the region.
