THE JANSA PROJECT Refurbishment of a Village in Ghana
Jansa Village is a settlement in Ghana of 545 people making up 45 families. They have to share just one borehole for water, which is very old and ineffective and only have one slat toilet block for the whole village. The main occupation of the villagers is basket weaving and whilst they grow their own food it is insufficient for their needs.
Our aim is to turn an impoverished village into a thriving one, with clean water, sanitation, education, food growing, food processing and trading.
Our plan is to replace the existing unreliable borehole and to build 45 household toilets at an estimated cost of £13700. Following on, we aim to provide agricultural training; build a food processing plant; create a Micro Finance Scheme; equip a school and provide a Kindergarten.
Following the success of a similar project undertaken by Leigh Rotary Club in Bimma, Ghana, the “Wigan Cluster” of eight local Rotary Clubs has chosen to support the Jansa Village project. This will be managed in the same way as Bimma, by AshantiDevelopment, a small, highly effective, London-based charity that works in Ghana, primarily bringing clean water and toilets to villages.
To raise funds, we are applying for Rotary District and Global Grants, in conjunction with a Rotary Club in Ghana. These grants have the potential to triple the amount raised, so every £1000 raised becomes £3000!
Whilst we are raising funds, children are dying of malnutrition and water borne diseases, so we need to move quickly! We ask that you, as individuals and clubs get involved and help us.
