MORPETH ROTARY ZOOM CHRISTMAS PARTY
The last meeting of Morpeth Rotary in 2020 was a first ever Zoom Christmas party, organised by Kevin Dunlop. The music was provided by George Brown, singing to his own piano accompaniment, starting with ‘Away in a Manger’.
It was followed by the Christmas sweater competition with a neutral and independent judge. To general acclaim it was decided that the winner was Alan Clark. A colourful picture was shown.
The next event was a recitation of some of the corniest Christmas cracker riddles that anyone could find. One of the better examples was ‘What kind of bike does Santa ride?’ - ‘A Holly Davidson’. After 12 Christmas jokes of this standard, George Brown was persuaded to reminisce about when he was part of a singing group that appeared every week on Tyne Tees TV. At around the same period, Kevin Dunlop had appeared in a series of agricultural programmes. George played ‘Hark the Herald Angels’.
Staying with the theme of TV productions, a home made comedy video was shown called ‘The Scrooge of Morpeth’ of someone having a series of adventures in the town to try to acquire a free Christmas tree. It was difficult to spot which Rotarian was responsible.
There was a short thank you to last President Martyn Jenkins and current President Colin Dyson for keeping the club going during this difficult year and a wish to all for a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Members regretted that because of Covid restrictions they could not personally attend the Rotary ‘Tree of Light’ at the Sanderson Arcade, although the tree and the event went ahead as usual, organised by Rhona Dunn.
George followed on with ‘White Christmas’ and this unique activity ended with a charity raffle, a toast and best wishes.
