John Nicholson Foundation Bursary award 2021

Rushen & Western Mann Rotary are pleased to announce the John Nicholson Bursary Award for Visual Arts for 2021 has been awarded to Beth Louella

One of Beth’s’ Portraits for NHS Heroes can be seen here, painted on stretched canvas, (unpaid Covid-19 project where NHS keyworkers have portraits created and gifted to them).

The object of the Foundation as specified by the late John Hobson Nicholson is to “advance visual arts in the Isle of Man……by way of grants, awards bursaries or prizes “.

Since its formation in 1991, the Foundation has supported many local artists and it has been able to make an annual bursary award of £500 as well as other awards at the discretion of the Council of Management.

On Beth’s application she stated that the award “would enable me time and materials to research, experiment and develop different methods of working and marketing which are well suited for exposure within the Isle of Man and the global online art market.

Art being viewed and bought online has increased significantly since the first Covid-19 lockdown and is becoming more of a norm in the art buying world. Online art sales are largely made up of lower priced artworks

Developing effective, efficient methods of working to create interesting and engaging art with lower price options and developing on Island and online marketing further is important for me as an Isle of Man artist.”

Beth is also a member of the Creative Network and has been making connections with Isle of Man creatives. The global growth of people engaging with art online and increasing online art sales are especially exciting opportunities for Isle of Man artists with the geographical restrictions of island living and a limited physical audience.
