President Charles welcomed everyone to the meeting and in his Interesting Rotary Information section, highlighted ‘Catholicism and Rotary’

Problems between the Catholic Church and Rotary surfaced in Spain in 1928 when Rotary was charged with being nothing but a new Satanic organisation and a secret society with quasi-religious overtones.  In 1929, the Vatican issued a decree that it was not expedient for Catholic priests to be members or associate with Rotary. This was worrisome to many Catholics in Rotary and to the Catholic R.I. President, Tom Sutton.  Critical and disparaging articles regularly appeared in Catholic newspapers.

By 1933, the factual errors were shown to be false, resulting in a mood swing in the Vatican.  Priests could now associate with or become members of Rotary, although development of Rotary in predominately Catholic countries was slow due to the church attitude.  In 1951, another Vatican decree warned Priests not to join Rotary and Catholics should be aware of seditious and suspect organisations.  There was an angry response from Catholics in prominent Rotary positions, declaring the decree “quite incomprehensible”.

The Vatican reacted and by 1959 the Catholic Truth Society declared that Rotary was neither secret nor seditious.  The relationship between the church and Rotary gradually thawed.  In 1970 Pope Paul VI addressed Rotarians in Italy. In 1979 Pope John Paul II spoke at the R.I. Convention in Rome, praising Rotary’s humanitarian programmes. He later accepted a Paul Harris Fellowship and a World Understanding and Peace award from Rotary.  The current Pope is an honorary member in the Rotary Club of Buenos Aires.

Reports and Announcements:

President Charles reported that he had received an email from the President of an Australian Rotary Club.  Seemingly, some Australian Rotary Clubs link with others in the world to find about them and what they are engaged in.  This President had chosen our Club to contact since her father had been born in Wishaw in 1907.  President Charles had responded to her enquiry.

For the second week running, Willie Talbot reported that the Bonus Ball had been rollover.  He had emailed individual members with his/her debit or credit position regarding the bonus ball and numbers club.  Payment for the 2021/22 numbers club had also been requested.

An enjoyable evening of ‘Social Chat’ followed.
