President Charles welcomed everyone to the meeting following up with his Interesting Rotary Information. This week, Charles gave some ‘Rotary Fun Facts’
First service project of the first Rotary club was the installation of public toilets in Chicago in 1917.
Rotary’s primary motto is “service above self.” But there is a secondary motto “one profits most who serves best”
The first women joined Rotary in 1987. Today more than 196,000 women Rotarians
The first Rotaract Club was formed in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Rotarians in the United States make up 28 percent of all Rotarians worldwide.
Nauru has the least number of Rotarians of any country in the world, 11.
The Rotary emblem was printed on a commemorative stamp for the first time in 1931 at the time of the Vienna convention.
Rotary became Rotary International in 1922, changing from the International Association of Rotary clubs.
In 1968 the first Rotary banner to orbit the moon was carried by astronaut Frank Borman a member of the Houston Space Centre Rotary Club.
The first Rotary convention was in Chicago in 1910. There were 16 clubs.
The first head of state to address a Rotary convention was President Warren G. Harding in 1923 in ST Louis.
In 1979 Rotary began a project to immunise six million children against polio in the Philippines. This led to Rotary making polio eradication its top priority.
In 1988 Rotary began the POLIO PLUS campaign with an initial fundraising pledge of 120 million dollars.
During the 1920s and 1930s Paul Harris travelled extensively ceremoniously planting trees to symbolise goodwill and friendship.
The largest Rotary club is the Oklahoma City Downtown club with over 600 members.
In1985, the Rotary club of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, recognised Michael Moore for 50 years of perfect attendance.
The fifth Rotary test: IS IT FUN?
Pigeon Derby - Paul Begley reported that almost all Club members had now subscribed and he gave the first report of the year with thanks to PP George Pollock and the Coalburn Pigeon Club. The race started at Dunbar.
1st - Jane Allan, 2nd equal – Charles Keeper, Des Donnelly, 4th – Ian St John, 5th – Willie Talbot, 6th – Tom McPherson, Booby – Peter McCrossan.
At the end of the racing season, the Rotarian with most points will receive £25, with £20 and £15 going to 2nd and 3rd placed Rotarians respectively.
Secretary Ian intimated that a West Area District meeting will take place on Saturday 21st August at 10.00am. Each Club has to submit a report to ADG Ken Drummond, for circulation to the other Clubs in the area.
The members then enjoyed an evening of ‘social chat’ with Callan Dick handling the technical aspects.

On 15th and 22nd December, Santa, and some Rotarian helpers, toured Motherwell, then Wishaw, spreading Christmas Spirit and raising funds for various charities.
