ENVIRONMENTAL PLAN (PAGE)

When did it all begin?

Rotary Ponteland formed an Environmental committee in July 2020 to spearhead a 10 year Environmental Plan "Pontenviroland", the vision of Rotarian Peter Lowry. It was a practical, yet ambitious plan to engage with the local community and other groups to improve the environment around the Ponteland and Darras Hall area.  Links were established with Northumberland Wildlife Trust, Ponteland Red Squirrels and Hedgehog groups. The mission of the group was to harness the energies of the local community with local schools, local Councils and voluntary groups to improve our local environment. In its first year Rotary Ponteland was able to donate £1500 to Darras Hall First school for an environmental project and £500 to Belsay Primary School to part fund an outside teaching area. The group continued to function during 2020 & 2021 but the some of the plans were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Recent developments 

During 2022 the number of group members increased together with an association with the Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE). The Envronmental committee was re-launched in September 2022 as Ponteland Action Group for the Enviroment (PAGE). New members brought with them a wide range of ideas and the group continues to grow through the publicity afforded to several projects published in Pont News & Views. PAGE has maintained its strong links with Rotary Ponteland but is now is exploring other avenues of funding support to enable the group to move forward with its ambitious plans for 2023 and beyond. In 2023 the tree planting programme continued and in November in excess of 60 saplings were planted on Rotary Way.
