June Rotary Ramble

Llangan, St Marys Hill and Troes

This months Ramble started at the 12th century St Canna's Church in Llangan, where in the grounds the 1.3 metre top of a 9th century Celtic Cross has been preserved and protected from the weather. The church tower holds two bells one medieval and the other dated1871.

On a warm and sunny day the seven walkers then set off across lush fields heading to St Marys Hill village and on to the hill top where the local horse fair used to be held from the15th century through to the mid 1950's. Fine views in every direction were enjoyed due to the clear sunny weather. A short walk down the lane took us to St Mary's Church giving more stunning views across unspoilt countryside and Bridgend.

Back to the fields and down the hill to Treoes, we ensured we gave a wide berth to the herd of cattle!.

At the outskirts of the village there was the unusual view of a London bus ready for renovation.

Through the village, managing not to stop off at The Star Inn on this occasion, we crossed fields back to Llangan where we were able to view the towering lead mine stack that was worked from1855 to 1879.  Back to the church and a short drive to the Star Inn for a meal and liquid refreshment
