At 3pm on Sat 11th Sept, the entries to our Boat Building Competition set off down the Allander. There were 3 winners in the competition, who are pictured with their entries. L to R Jacob (Aesthetic Design), Aiden (Engineering Design) and Rory Race).

Boat Building Competition

At 3pm on Saturday 11th September, the entries on our Boat Building Competition set off in the final part, a race down the Allander. 10 entries set off in a slow moving, shallow section. A bit of help was required to get past a few obstacles. Despite the calm conditions a number still failed to get to the end having gotten somewhat water laden.

There were 3 winners in the competition. They are pictured with their entries. Left to right they are Jacob Sixsmith (Aesthetic Design), Aiden Thompson (Engineering Design) and Rory Campbell (Race).

The judge commented on the winning designs. The engineering design was a simple but effective design based on two floats joined with a simple deck. When judging he had made a special mention that Rory’s boat, the race winner, was the only entry with a keel.

Jacob’s boat was the clear winner in the aesthetics. Its interior was accessed via a hatch to stairs down to the boiler room. The boiler cleverly vented through the funnel where smoke was seen. It was an excellent model and a worthy winner.

Each of the winners receive a £10 gift voucher.

If you were there and wondering what about the raft? Well it was a solid design and proved this by crossing the line first. However, it was disqualified (at his instruction) due to the assistance from a somewhat overage person.

The positive feedback received means we will probably run the competition again next year and also for an older age group.

Pre race Allander President Stuart's highlighted the risks of what anyone falling in the water had to look out. The only person to slip while aiding the boats down the river was - you guessed it. Stuart - who is pictured at the end looking rather wet.
