Peter stuck for words? Surely not!

Community Service Chairman is rewarded for his efforts

Sunday 1st August 2021 will mark a landmark for the Covid vaccination roll-out at the Alfred Barrow Health Centre in Barrow, as the 60,000th jab is delivered.

Thanks are due to a myriad of people who have been involved in the programme which has been running since December 2020. These include clinicians and all the support staff and a great many others.

Around 100 volunteers have also given their time in helping to marshall, making people feel welcome and putting them at their ease when needed. Many of the volunteers have come from Barrow's three Rotary Clubs, Furness, Furness Peninsula, and Barrow.

Organising so many volunteers to do such task as cleaning the seats each time someone vacates one, checking everyone in, and many other jobs has been a mammoth undertaking which has run very smoothly.

The man who saw to that is Peter Garwood, owner of Michaelson House Hotel on Fairfield Lane in Barrow, and a member of the Rotary Club of Furness.

Peter has toiled for many an hour late into the night compiling colour-coded rotas and trying to make sure that each timeslot is filled. He has also overseen the operation at most of the clinics. He's done this without any sort of reward, just the satisfaction of seeing a job well done.

However so many of his fellow helpers wanted to show their appreciation that a surprise party was organised, and Peter was showered with gifts and named as 'Rotarian of the Year' by the Rotary Club of Furness.

To say that Peter was shocked would be an. understatement, and although it's hard to believe, he was, for once, stuck for words.

Natalie Chapples, from Barrow Borough Council, has also played a key role in the project and was named as an Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Furness, for the important part she has played in the initiative. Thanks Peter and Natalie for all you have done.
