Lottie Doherty, the President of the University of St Andrews Students’ Association, was the Rotary Club’s guest speaker. The Association was created in 1989, to bring together the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), by then already over a century old, and the Union, founded in the 1920s to organise social activities for students. Both had moved into the building on St Mary’s Place, commonly known as the ‘Union’, when it opened in 1973. Lottie graduated last year, in Art History and Philosophy, and is now one of six ‘sabbaticals’ – elected by the student body to paid, full-time posts, to promote student interests and well-being.  As President, Lottie is the chief spokesperson for students, both internally, to the University Court, and to external bodies, including the press and the Scottish Government. Besides Covid, key issues during her time jn office have included a new menace, the spiking of drinks, and now, the Ukrainian crisis. Mental health and accommodation in St Andrews were among the topics of the lively discussion that followed, before Lottie took her guests on a tour of the building, which most had not visited since its complete refurbishment in 2013. Lottie was thanked for her talk and commended for her passionate commitment to her role.
