Canal Clean and Tidy

14th April 2024

Today was our first session on the canal this Spring.  A general tidy up, weeding and dead heading of the finished daffodils.  Many of the plants were looking really healthy which is not surprising after all the rain we have had!  We added a couple more plants - sedum and montbretia - and sprinkled some wild flower seed.

14th October 2023

The various beds were weeded and generally maintained during August and September with some new plants added.  Today we tidied them up again and planted tulip and daffodil bulbs which hopefully will give us a splash of colour next Spring.

2nd July 2023

We did a short session canalside tidying up the flowerbeds.  Just a little weeding needed and we watered too.  Next time we shall see if we can add a few new plants.

We enjoyed a sunny session this morning canalside.  We added some plants to the flowerbeds and did some general tidying up and weeding.  Also watering was required with the good weather.

We enjoyed another productive session this morning.  Weeding, general tidying up and a few new plants added.  The flowerbeds are now looking fairly well stocked up and we are looking forward to seeing how they develop over  spring and summer.

March 2023

We were back in action this morning after our winter break and we were blessed with some lovely weather.  Most of our plants looked like they had survived and it was very pleasing to see some colour with the daffodils out.  It was cutting back time, weeding and generally tidying up.  Also we added some topsoil.  We even managed to do some litter picking.

December 2022

After sessions in October and November continuing to weed the beds we are now pausing tuntil the new year.

The wood to replace the bench has been provided and the cast iron has been removed to be cleaned and painted. This will be reinstalled in the new year.

11th September 2022
There was plenty of weeding to do on our session today after the recent rains.  We have tidied up the beds, added some more plants and compost then planted some daffodil and tulip bulbs.  It should start to look really nice from next Spring onwards.

14th August 2022

We enjoyed another productive session this morning, working on the flowerbeds by the two bridges in the town centre. There was plenty of weeding to do and we did some new plantings with surplus plants from our own gardens. We then thoroughly watered and we are now hoping for some rain soon, please!

29th June 2022

A short and emergency trip to tidy and weed on the flower beds at each side of the two bridges so it's ready for the Yorkshire in Bloom review on the 5th July. This is not competitive and a way we can get expert tips on how to make things better.

Today's trip we managed to fill 3 sacks of weeds and 2 sacks of rubbish all collected from the flower beds!

With the added bonus that we had several positive comments from passers by saying how much a difference we'd made.

7th June 2022

Today we joined with the Lockkeepers Volunteers for some new plantings in the many flower boxes maintained at the Canal Basin.  It was a lovely sunny morning and we thoroughly enjoyed tidying up the flower boxes after the Spring flowerings and adding a variety of perennials.

We are pleased to advise that Calderdale Council have supported our efforts by approving our Ward Forum grant application for £500. This has enabled us to buy some new plants which we have planted out today with the help of Incredible Edible. We have included some before and after photos to show you the impact this has had. Enjoy the canal!

10th April

We managed a short work session today when we weeded and tidied up the flower beds and borders at both Anchor and Huddersfield Road Bridges.  We are hoping our grant application will shortly be approved by Calderdale to enable up to proceed with some new plantings in these areas.  We may arrange a separate work session for this, so please watch our website for any dates advised.  Members of the public, families with children will be most welcome to come along and help out.  Many hands make light work!

13th March

Unfortunately due to illnesses, holidays and calamities for members there were not enough people to be effective so no work was performed this month at the canal.

A grant application has been submitted to Calderdale's Ward Forum Grant committee, this will allow the purchase of plants and structures to enhance the canal side.

Not a surprise that we cancelled this Sunday due to the weather forecast, which turned out to be accurate and rained all day!

This time we split our focus helping Incredible Edible with their plant beds, cutting back more of the thick weeds coming out of the canal bank on the foot path side and finally clearing the scrub area by the Bridgend crossing.

Another great morning enjoyed by all.

28th Nov 2021

Our first tidy day and a great turn out from members, some interested members of the community and folks from Incredible Edible. We managed to clear the scrub areas at both sides of the bridge up Huddersfield Road by Sainsburys supermarket as well as the areas around the seats by the Bethal street car park.

Spending about an hour and a half sorting out we had to finish when the trailer was full!
