October 2021 : Presidents Diary
9 October
Our Table Top sale in aid of the Portland Carers Support Group was a great success and thanks to everyone who helped on the day. The next table top sale is on 13 November in support of Julia’s House Childrens Hospice.
12 October
We were joined by Angus Dawson, retired Deputy Head of the Atlantic Academy who spoke to us about the changing face of secondary schools. Angus gave us an insight into his teaching career in some very challenging schools and some very heartwarming stories about how the behaviour and aspirations of children have positively changed in the right environment.
15-17 October
District 1200 held their annual Conference in Plymouth. Sarah, Elizabeth, Mark, myself and our partners enjoyed the weekend which started with dinner and a Race Night on Friday, really interesting and inspirational conference speakers on Saturday followed by dinner and dancing on Saturday night. The weather was beautiful and Plymouth Ho! Offered great views across Plymouth Sound. We even found time for a visit to Plymouth Gin, and a boat trip!
22 October
Roberts big birthday bash in aid of the Rotary Nepal Fund and the Gurka Signals Trust Fund. The party theme was ‘fashion victims’ and the array of costumes was so imaginative. We danced the night away to the Leggomen in the most stunning venue – the Stone Hall in Chiswell, a converted church. Thank you to Robert for inviting us, we had a ball!
26 October
We were joined by Prof. Tom Shippey, author and renown Tolkein scholar , who gave us a captivating talk on The Vikings and a Dorset hero. Tom revealed his extensive knowledge on the subject including local burial grounds on the Ridgeway. Thank you Tom for such an informative and enjoyable talk.
A presentation was made to the winner of our Community Award 2021. Jonathan Powney was nominated for his tireless support of 1st Portland Scouts and awarded £150 for the charity. Well done Jonathan! There were 8 nominees in total who were so impressive for their contribution to the community of the island that they were awarded a Community
Award of Merit.
30 October
Elizabeth and Barrie held a Halloween party which raised £200 for Foundation. A great night was had by all and the costumes were amazing!
