Rotary Club of Cheltenham North December 2021 Bulletin
HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL
From the President Geoff Fox
What a very pleasant and happy occasion, our Christmas Lunch at Brickhampton proved to be last Thursday.
It was unfortunate that some Members were unable to attend at the last minute, as a result of being caught up in Covid regulations, including Tony and Sue Hughes who were, and continue to be, held up in South Africa.
The food was generally thought to have been extremely good, and the company was, of course, excellent. I thought that the Brickhampton staff did a good job.
Our grateful thanks go to Rosanne Cole for all the hard work she put in to the meticulous organisation of a very successful event. Our thanks too, to Gwynne Tucker Brown for organising the raffle, that resulted in a donation of £300 going to Shelter Box.
We now look forward to the Carol Concert where tickets look to be selling well, and the programme has happily a very Christmassy look about it. After the Special General Meeting on the 16th, we can relax until the New Year, and I take this opportunity of wishing every one a very happy, peaceful and Covid free Christmas and New Year.
The number of cases of the latest variety of Covid are increasing rapidly but, at the present time, the number of people requiring hospital admission are small in comparison. Numbers on ICU have increased to 8 and nearly all of these are unvaccinated. In order to slow down the rate of spread we are being asked back to work at home and wear masks in shops, pubs and indoor events. This means we will need to wear masks at the Carol Concert on the 14th. We should all be careful and keep socially distanced when possible. I am
assuming all our club members have been triple jabbed which appears to offer a high degree of protection against Omicron. Many of you will your Covid passport because you have been travelling. For those of us who have not, your covid passport can be downloaded by accessing the NHS app on your mobile phone.
Cheltenham Wine Festival Steve Wood
A huge thank you to Steve and his team for all their hard work.
Members may like to know that, subject to audit, the Wine Festival made a net profit of £10,843.40 this year. I think that this is a very pleasing result and we are grateful to all who helped to achieve it.
However, we have the potential to increase this profit somewhat. Two excellent prizes form the BIG ROTARY CHARITY RAFFLE remain unclaimed and we have no way of knowing who held the winning tickets.
The prizes concerned are:
★ Afternoon Champagne Tea for 4 at The Ivy Montpellier Brasserie - this prize expires on 30 April 2022 and please note that they are not doing afternoon tea over the festive period but will resume in the New Year.
★ Dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine at The Mahal restaurant.
We are proposing to invite members to submit a sealed bid for either one or both of these items and the highest bid will secure the appropriate prize. Full details will be circulated shortly.
Finally, don’t forget that the 2022 Cheltenham Wine Festival will take place on Saturday 29 October at the Pittville Pump Room.
Father Christmas Richard Purdon
I did 2 days for Round Table this week.
The photo was taken at Morrisons at Hatherley.
They collected for Churchdown Scouts on Tuesday.
And for Cheltenham Open Door on Thursday.
At the time of writing we have sold 400 tickets for the Carol Concert. Leckhampton School have been amazing and account for 230 of these. The programme has attracted £1450 in advertising and we have had £500 sponsorship from Renishaw. The Co-op have very kindly supplied 150 mince pies.
We will have to wear masks.
Will those people who have not yet paid for their tickets either do so on line and give/send a cheque to Linda Pawley.
We look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday.
