A Birthday Celebration. Wednesday 29th January 1947

Malton and Norton Rotary Club. 1947-2022
75 years supporting the Malton and Norton Community and still going strong!

Malton and Norton Rotary Club
75 years old on 29th January 2022

Wednesday 29th January 1947 was not the best of days for the inauguration of a club, dedicated to the charitable support of the community, both nationally and internationally, to have its first meeting.

In the UK, food rationing had been reintroduced and bread, cheese, bacon, ham, meat and fats  as well as sugar also remained scarce. It took until mid-1954 before rationing finally ended.

The NHS still had to come into being and the country was about to experience a winter where snow fell for fifty five days continuously from the 24th January to March 12th. Just to make it worse the thaw that followed saw widespread flooding across the whole of the UK, including Malton, Norton and the surrounding area.

The first three presidents for the early meetings were local residents, John Proudfoot.Sidney Hancox and Ralph Yates

What do we do today?

Until Covid 19 stopped  play, the fifteen Rotary members and many Friends of Rotary raised some ten thousand pounds every year through various activities ranging from our 'Pop up Posh Charity Shop, golf day and other special events.  Together with the 'Wilf Jackson Charity' (founded by a past Rotary member) these funds have gone into supporting families, young people, charitable organisations and those in need in the community.

These donations range from £5k a year to Yorkshire Cancer Research. Support for young people (computers were donated all primary schools in Malton, Norton and local villages), help in providing home necessities and funds where needed, local environmental activities and projects that the help improve the street scenes in our three towns.

Rotary members have provided help in Vaccination Clinics, the Free Fridge and Town activities

We thank you for all your support
