The Science and Side Effects of Sword Swallowing

At a meeting on 2nd March, the club was treated to a very interesting talk by Dr. Brian Witcombe about the medical side effects of sword swallowing.
He showed us anatomical diagrams demonstrating that if the swallower gets his (usually his not her) head tipped back correctly, the gullet is exactly straight from mouth to stomach. He went on to say that most injuries (some he had come across personally) were either the result of the gullet not being exactly straight or the sword blade cutting sideways, like a knife.
Obviously, for the skilful operator, this was a rare occurrence.
It was a most interesting talk, and at times amusing as well!
