Dalbeattie Rotarians were privileged to have Rotary District 1020 Governor Ken Robertson (Cumbernauld) visit our Club at our meeting on Zoom on Thursday 3 February 2022. Focusing on our work as Rotarians, Ken reminded us of words of the blind and deaf American author Helen Keller (1880-1968) “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much."
He spoke of the value of the smile in relation to our work as Rotarians. The smile gives pleasure both to one sharing it and the recipient. Additionally, Ken used SMILE as an acrostic in relation to our work as Rotarians in 2021/2022 responding to the aim “Serve to Change Lives,” the theme of Rotary International’s activity world-wide, to which we are challenged by Shekhar Mehta, Rotary International World President 2021-2022, a member of the Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, West Bengal, India,
S - SERVE and SUPPORT. “SERVE to Change Lives” is this year’s Rotary International motto which is our challenge as Rotarians in 2021/2022. Also, to SUPPORT “End Polio Now” with the further aims to empower girls and to continue to support Rotary Foundation, involving non-Rotarians as partners in achieving these aims.
M - Members and Membership: Make use of the greater flexibility available for members through global hub and satellite clubs.
I - Inclusive: Make sure the Club is open, welcoming and representative of the local community.
L - Leadership: Every Rotarian is a Leader. He reminded that what Napoleon said, that “a leader is a dealer in hope.” In our thinking, keep to the fore the three C’s of Possibility. Curiosity. Courage. Commitment.
E - Environment : this has been added this year as the 7th area of focus for Rotary International.
Ken left us with the words of the American Singer / Song Writer Garth Brooks (born 1962) - “Just keep taking chances and having fun.”
