We made contact with the Rotary Club of Warsaw Wilanow, Poland, very soon after the war between Russia and Ukraine started. Through them we sent an initial £1000 to help the people of Ukraine.
Medical supplies purchased with our donation went through a ‘Rotary pipeline’ direct to the hospital in Lviv. The aid was received within days.
We held a three day bucket collection at Aldi Dronfield and the very generous people of Dronfield donated over £2000.
This sum has also been sent to RC Warsaw Wilanow and water, tinned/packet food and medical supplies have been sent in to Ukraine by the Rotary pipeline.
At the end of March we submitted an application to Vodafone UK under their ‘Connectivity for All’. We were successful and were donated 100 pre paid SIMS to distribute to Ukrainian refugees who came to our area. We received the SIMS in April and have sent/delivered over 60 to date (25/4/22) to hosts in Dronfield, Chesterfield, South Sheffield and Rotherham.
The SIM cards give six months unlimited texts/calls and 20gb of data every 30 days. We have been told they are a lifeline keeping them in touch with family and friends.
One 13 year old boy who had escaped with his mother told us: ‘Having my own card means I can talk to my Dad every day. He is where bombs are falling every day when he answers I know he is still alive’We are working with the Churches in Dronfield and other voluntary groups to do all we can to make the refugees feel safe and welcome.
