Speaker Brenda Dinsdale. Host Tony Wortman

Brenda returned to tell us about her experience volunteering to take in a Ukrainian refugee.

Having decided, with her husband, that they wished to offer to take a refugee from Ukraine, she completed the necessary application under the Government scheme.  Following acceptance, she put her profile on the appropriate website, asking for an older man with whom they would have more in common.

A 68 year old man responded and the then had to complete all the Government and Local Authority formalities, which were considerable and not all helpful.

However, all was eventually agreed and the refugee then had to complete the formalities in Ukraine for an exit visa, which was granted.  He then travelled via a very tortuous route, including Berlin and Brussels, before landing in London, where they were there to meet him and escort him to their home in the North East.

He spoke no English, but Brenda does speak Russian, so they have been able to converse.  Whilst there have been some problems along the way, these have been overcome.  The greatest concern for their guest now is that the scheme only last for 6 months and he is unsure what will happen at the end of that time.

Despite the bureaucratic and other difficulties along the way, Brenda and Brian are pleased that they have allowed a retired man to enjoy some peace and freedom in their home and would probably do it again.
