The Club Bulletin for July 2022

                                                         Rotary Club of Cheltenham North

                                                                      July 2022 Bulletin

From Janet Keenan

I am writing this mainly for those of you who were not at the last assembly. As you know, I take over as President on the seventh of July. I am not intending to make sweeping changes to a well running club. There is one change I would like to make, and that is to the seating at dinner. In a club as large as ours there is a natural tendency to sit with people who are already friends. I would like to try out a ‘pot luck’ system, where you take a raffle ticket and this dictates where you sit. This has the advantage of mixing us up and also making sure that the ‘top table’ is always fully attended. This will not apply to partners evenings and it can always be reviewed.

My main charity is to be National Star College. They are due to start building some new student accommodation at Ullenwood and I am hoping we can fund the equipment for the kitchen in one of the two large flats. This will have a plaque on the wall to say that it has been supplied by Cheltenham North. A fund-raiser from the college is going to come and talk to us at the end of September and we will arrange a visit to Ullenwood, probably in early October.

I have been going to Rowanfield School for the last three weeks to hear the children in Year Three read. This is very important as they have missed so much of the vital early years’ schooling. It is also extremely enjoyable; Rowanfield is a lovely school and the children are well behaved and eager to learn. I urge any of you, who have some time to spare on a Tuesday and/or Thursday morning, to sign up for this. You do not have to commit to every day, just to as often as you can do it. You need a DBS certificate which means taking your passport and a utilities bill to the school secretary who will scan them and send off for the form to fill in on line. There are only four more weeks of term so you may wish to wait until September and start with the new school year. If you do then please organise your DBS before the end of term, so you are ready to start.

I look forward to seeing you at the ‘Hand-over’ next week. Then I am proposing to give you a short biographical talk, so that you have some idea of who you are getting for the next year.

Rotary Conference – Saturday October 15th 2022

I wonder if I could make a few points about the District Conference as communicated at the Club Assembly.

Every DG has a set of priorities/objectives for his/her year.

One of these is to hold a District Conference – “in some shape or form”.

Historically, it has been a weekend away at the seaside in March.

In the last 3 years, due to the covid pandemic , this has not been possible. And in ‘21 and ‘22 the Conferences were held on line.

This clearly satisfied the need to hold the event, but it was just not the same.

So this year, there is a major change.

Firstly, there will be a 1 day event on Saturday October 15THin Bristol.

And secondly on Saturday March 18th 23, there will be a Gala Dinner and Dance at Hatherley Manor.

At the Bristol Health and Leisure Club, a range of top quality speakers have been arranged.

All of the members present at the Club AGM and Assembly were given a brochure.

We have more for those who were not able to get a copy!!

And the details and the Speakers are on our Club website and on the District 1, too.

So is the event in October worth attending?

· It is unique. As this will be the last 1 of its kind. In future year, Districts will combine with others. In June 24, this will be held in Exeter in Anne’s year.

· It is a great way to see and meet others in action.

· It is inspiring.

· And the Speakers are well known and respected.

· It comes with a lavish buffet lunch.

Please consider coming and signing up by the End of July, if you can.

The social in March, is local to us. It falls in a week, when we will not have a Club event, and so this will give us our “Rotary fix”.

Please support President Janet and I who have already registered.

Kids Out Elizabeth Jones

The Kids Out charity have sent £445 to Cheltenham North to donate to Rowanfield School to help with their trip to the Panto this December .

Family from Ukraine Sue Jenkins

People have a preconceived idea about refugees and I wanted to dispel that myth... it is like when people knew I was from Australia they would ask me whether I knew people that they had met there!

There is no reason why this family and others settling in town, might not be considered as Rotarians in the future.

Svitlana asked me yesterday if I knew what ITV is, because she has been asked to appear on the Good Morning Britain Show to discuss mediation between refugees and hosts to resolve issues.

LINC Cycle Ride – Sunday 17th July Tony Pawley

I am very pleased to be taking part again this year, cycling 64km from Tewkesbury through the delightful countryside of Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire.

I have Linc’s permission to use my electric bike again. No, it’s not cheating! I still have to pedal – I just get a bit of assistance to help me go further.

All sponsorship is very welcome, either through my Sponsorship Form or a donation through the Linc website.

For any further information, please ask me. 01242 361539, 07985 207444, tony@thepawleys.co.uk
