The Club bulletin for August 2022

                                                     Rotary Club of Cheltenham

                                                          August 2022 Bulletin

From The President Janet Keenan

My year has started quietly and there is little to report. One pleasing occurrence was the receipt of a letter from Shelterbox, thanking us for the £500 donation we sent towards their work in Ukraine. They currently have a team in Moldova and are coordinating with partners in Poland and Ukraine. I am putting the whole letter onto the website for everyone to read.

At our last meeting we had an excellent talk from Janet Ropner on U3A. The local branch in Cheltenham is very active and there are a great many groups. If you have some spare time it would be well worth looking on the website to see if there is anything that interests you – and the topics are so varied that there is bound to be.

Our next talk is from Angela Lamond and is on ‘Women’s Refuge’. Following this, on August 18th, Air Marshall Sir Rob Wright, is talking to us on ’40 years in the same job’. In between these two meetings we have our visit to Woodchester Valley Vineyard on August 11th. If the weather remains as it has been recently we should have a very enjoyable trip with a guided tour and a table supper. I look forward to seeing many of you then.

Wine Festival Steve Wood

Saturday 29 October 2022 at the Pittville Pump Room.

Tickets have been on sale since 1 April and, following a buoyant start, sales have dried up a little lately. I would ask all members to promote the event and to encourage ticket sales to their family and friends. Tickets can be purchased from the Cheltenham Wine Festival web site, which can be accessed either directly or via the Club website. The price per ticket is £25, but you and your friends and family can secure a £5 discount by entering the code ROTARY22 in the promo code box on the page where you enter your name, email and address. The box appears just above the space for entering your name.

We are hoping for another successful Wine Festival. Requests for help on the day will be sent out much nearer the date which is approaching rapidly.

Boules Nigel Gilhead

We all need to congratulate our boules squad, they have played the three matches in our division, winning against North Cotswolds 2-4 and Pershore 6-0, but losing 2-4 against Winchcombe. The games were all in the evening and were usually followed with a pub supper along with members of the other team, making for a very sociable event. Not having seen people since covid, it was surprising at the number of friends who had transferred to other Clubs, so this was an opportunity to catch up on the news.
