Help for West Norfolk Young Carers
For many years the Rotary Club of King’s Lynn has supported the help given to young people who have caring responsibilities at home. Each year a Christmas party is organised for some 40 or 50 youngsters and financial support is also provided. At a recent meeting of the Club a cheque for £500 was accepted, on behalf of West Norfolk Young Carers, by Jackie Haverson and Jane Evans. This was part of money raised by Rotarian Derek Harvey on a sponsored walk to Santiago de Compostela earlier this year. The remainder of the money is going to support Polio Plus, the Rotary drive to eradicate polio worldwide.
West Norfolk Young Carers has supported over 7,000 young people (aged 7 to 18) since it was founded, and currently has some 300 active cases. Young carers frequently miss out on the usual childhood activities because they are busy caring for someone in the family who needs help and support and, all too frequently, their education is negatively affected. The charity helps the young carers and their families overcome many of these challenges by offering meaningful activities, breaks and support, all aimed at helping the young carers claim back some of their childhood.
