Rotary “Wrap Up Cardiff”

Press Release

PRESS  RELEASE

ROTARY  IN  CARDIFF  AND LOCAL  CHARITIES  SAY  A  HUGE  THANK  YOU  TO  THE  PUBLIC  FOR  THEIR  DONATIONS.

Yet again the Rotary “Wrap Up Cardiff” project received over 1,000 warm, good quality coats, gilets and fleeces from the generous people of Cardiff.  By 2nd November all the coats had been checked, sorted and donated to recognised charities supporting both the homeless and refugee communities in Cardiff.

This project was a joint effort supported by members from eight Rotary Clubs based in the Cardiff area.  At the beginning of October they distributed the collection boxes around Cardiff for your generous donations and emptied them on several occasions during the month long project.

Corporate partners Safestore Uk gave Rotary free space to store all your donations and supplied a cage in their reception area which allowed the public to donate directly to their depot on Newport Road.

The YMCA in Cardiff assigned Rotary the use of their sports hall on two occasions.  This enabled our Rotarian volunteers to sort through all the donations which were then divided into separate piles for men, women and children before being packed into sacks for distribution.

The District Governor for Rotary in Southern Wales, Wayne Morgan,  also lent a hand and said he was delighted to be invited and be part of such a worthwhile project.  He added his congratulations to everyone by saying this service project shows Rotary at it’s very best.

All donations were delivered by the first week in November to the nominated organisations including The Huggard Centre; The Salvation Army;  Space4U; The Wallich; Homestart and the Ukranian Hub.  This ensures that at least 1,000 people in need will have warm clothing as they face a difficult winter.

The message which came back from all the organisations was a huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated.  Every organisation was unanimous in their message which was that they were thrilled to receive your donations and thanked Rotary and the people of Cardiff who continue to support people in need in our city.

The project has now closed for 2022 but we will be repeating the “Wrap Up Cardiff” project in 2023 so please don’t throw away your coats, fleeces or gilets, store them ready for next October.

Note to Editors

Information about three of the charities supported.

SPACE4U - Space4U provides a welcoming place in Cardiff for refugees and people who are seeking asylum. They offer friendship and support, English classes, recreational activities and practical help and information. Operating out of the Trinity Centre on Newport Road, they run a clothing store which opens every Monday morning. They see individuals and families by appointment when they try to provide them with clothes and shoes appropriate to the season.

“We are extremely grateful to the Rotary Clubs for donating many good quality coats via its 'Wrap Up' project.   We've already distributed many of these coats which have made a positive difference to asylum seekers as they get used to our winter weather.

THE  WALLICH  -  We believe that everyone deserves the right to a home, but more than that, that everyone deserves the right to feel safe, to feel valued and to feel positive about their future.

The Wallich operates under three core objectives: getting people off the streets; keeping people off the streets; and creating opportunities for people. We are Wales’s leading centre for people who are sleeping rough in Cardiff and our Intervention Centre and Hostel are open 24/7.

THE  HUGGARD  CENTRE.  For more than 30 years, anyone seeking help and refuge from the streets have come to us for food, and a safe, warm place to stay.  We are not a soup kitchen.  We focus on giving people who are homeless and vulnerable the support they need to rebuild their lives – to have a future again.

ROTARY  INTERNATIONAL

Rotary is for Communities

During lockdown thousands of people have been volunteering in their communities.  Many members say they join Rotary because it gives them a chance to give something back to their community.  In local communities alone, each club raises tens of thousands of pounds for community projects and local charities. Members also volunteer their time - supervising and organising community events, running projects to promote the achievements of young people and coordinating educational programmes.

Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, part of Rotary International, has 1,800 clubs and more than 51,000 members.

Rotary International was founded in 1905 in Chicago and is now the world’s largest international service organisation with 1.2 million professional men and women as members.

There are 33,000 clubs in 200 countries and geographical areas. Rotary clubs are open to men and women of all ages who are business or community leaders and want to use their skills and experience for the benefit of others.

Rotary initiates local and global projects to promote world understanding and peace and improve life conditions for people of all ages and cultures. To find out more, visit www.ribi.org.
