Handover 3 (11/01/23)
With the successful system of having four Presidents in a year, the Rotary Club of South Foreland held its third handover of 2022/23 when current President John Dunkley handed over to incoming President Peter West.
John welcomed members and guests, including Assistant District Governor Peter Sherred. The last three months have been busy but enjoyable and productive: John thanked all members for their support in attending meetings, helping with events and fundraising.
The club organised the Royal British Legion poppy appeal collection at Morrisons from 29th October until 12th November. With the support of many local volunteers nearly £5,000 was collected. Our Shuffleboard Evening on 18th November was well attended, great fun, and raised £1,200; half was sent to the End Polio Campaign and half to a local charity. On 23rd November the club hosted the meeting for the Cinque Ports Rotary Clubs at the Marina Hotel, with sixty people attending.
John commented that despite the age profile of its members and the health issues that some contend with, the club has continued to be effective and supportive. One member who has supported club events, dealt with publicity, and managed the website is Mike Prebble. John was pleased to present Mike with a Paul Harris Fellowship.
After the presentation John handed over to Incoming President Peter West, who referred to how active the club had been recently and looked forward to this continuing in future.
James Rouse then gave a fascinating account, with slides, of what happens at an Honours Investiture at Windsor Castle. He and his wife Rose attended a long-delayed ceremony in early December when their daughter Pippa received her CBE award from William, Prince of Wales, for her work in the immigration sector of the Home Office. We were given an amazing insight into the detailed planning and instructions, the pomp, ritual, and personnel involved in the ceremony in this historic and resplendent setting. Congratulations to Pippa and her proud parents.
